No Longer Bound (Stage 5)
Isabella Ayres, Fall 2025, Acrylic, oil, and glass on canvas, 24 × 36 in
This work captures a moment of confrontation between an identity shaped by the world and one restored through Christ. The figure appears twice—once consumed by self-perception, the other beginning to turn toward truth. Through mirrored imagery, the piece explores the tension between how she sees herself and who she is created to be.
The figure on the right is overcome with self-consciousness, covering her face as she fixates on her body through a distorted lens. In contrast, the figure on the left looks upward, symbolizing a turning toward God—seeking freedom, truth, and renewal. This shift reflects the call to “turn my eyes from looking at worthless things” (Psalm 119:37) and to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).
The shattered glass surrounding the figures represents lies, comparison, and spiritual oppression breaking away. As the fragments disperse, they signify the release of what once held her captive. The more stable, structured mirror on the left suggests a new foundation being formed—rooted in grace and truth. This work reflects the promise that “if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17), and that through Him, she is no longer bound but set free (Romans 6:6–7; 2 Corinthians 3:17).
