Measured by Lies (Stage 3)

Isabella Ayres, Fall 2025, Acrylic and oil on canvas, 40 × 30 in

This work represents the stage where insecurity turns into action and control. The figure is bound and measured, overtaken by comparison and the lie that her worth can be quantified. The measuring tape wraps tightly around her body, symbolizing both physical restriction and mental captivity. While one side presents numbers, the other reads, “why is it never enough?”, revealing the truth that no measurement will ever satisfy standards rooted in comparison.

The body is distorted into unnatural thinness, emphasizing the danger of chasing an ideal never meant to be reached. This reflects the consequences of listening to the enemy, where comparison becomes the thief of joy, and the body is deprived of nourishment, rest, and care. Consuming social media and external noise warps perception, creating unrealistic standards while keeping the viewer trapped in a cycle of striving—“just one more inch, just one more pound.”

This work is grounded in the warning that “the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10). This piece speaks to how external influences—social media, cultural standards, and constant comparison—can warp perception and create addiction to unattainable goals. Rooted in faith, it confronts the sin of envy and the loss of identity that follows when the world, rather than God, defines worth.
