Losing Sight (Stage 2)

Isabella Ayres, Spring 2026, Oil on canvas, 24 × 24 in

This painting represents the second stage of the cycle, where insecurity evolves into mental overwhelm and spiritual disconnection. The figure becomes consumed by self-consciousness, as comparison and intrusive thoughts begin to dominate her sense of identity. Her face is blurred, and her eyes—often considered the window to the soul—are absent, preventing the viewer from connecting with her inner life. This absence suggests a loss of clarity, as well as the quiet extinguishing of truth within her mind.

Horizontal streaks of color move rapidly across the surface, visualizing racing thoughts and the constant noise of comparison. The body begins to fragment, no longer grounded in stability, but shaped by external voices rather than internal truth. As these thoughts take hold, they transform into shame, distorting how she sees herself.

This work reflects the danger of listening to the world over God. When identity is no longer rooted in Christ, it becomes unstable and easily reshaped. It echoes the call to “take every thought captive” (2 Corinthians 10:5) and to “turn my eyes from worthless things” (Psalm 119:37), reminding the viewer that truth must be chosen amid mental noise.
